Shanghai and Hong Kong are the 2 economic capitals and strategic hubs for the business in Asia. From a logistical point of view, there are 2 frequent scenarios: companies have based their logistics hubs in Shanghai, but they have also logistics operations, retail stores or customers in Hong Kong; companies have based years ago their logistics hubs in Hong Kong but they are evaluating or already relocating to Shanghai because of the high costs of space and manpower in Hong Kong.
In both scenarios, these companies have the need for moving cargo from Shanghai to Hong Kong. Freight is most commonly moved from Shanghai to Hong Kong either by air or by the slower but cheaper option of the sea.
In our experience, it is unusual to find a forwarder who proposes shipping by truck, as most are unable or unwilling to deal with the challenges of moving freight on land. In addition to a distance of more than 1,600 km, it is necessary to cross the border, change trucks, and await customs clearance before the final delivery to the city center.
Of all the forwarders that we approached for benchmarking, very few of them were confident about offering this service, and would usually have to carry out checks with the relevant department first, or would look for a third party able to offer this service. The few who were able to offer this service could not do so with less than 4 to 5 days lead time.
